Wireless communications

Target audience:

This course is designed for those who require an appreciation of wireless communications including those joining the telecoms sector in a managerial or technical role.

 

Course prerequisites:

This course does not assume any prior knowledge of telecommunications.

 

Course objectives:
By the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the relationship between the bandwidth occupied by a radio signal and its information transfer capability.
• describe the factors that affect the ability of a radio receiver to successfully extract the information carried by a radio signal.
• describe the factors that affect the choice of radio frequency for a particular application with reference to the regulation of frequency allocations.
• describe the applications and role of the components of fixedmicrowave radio links.
• describe the characteristics and applications of geostationary and low earth orbit satellite communications.
• explain the principles of operation and capabilities of WiFi communications.
• describe the capabilities and applications of, and means of providing, fixed wireless access (FWA) to online services.
• describe how mobile systems have evolved through various generations with each offering improvements in service offerings.
• explain the concepts of, and requirements for, handover and roaming in mobile systems.
• describe the role of radio access networks and core networks with reference to user equipment authentication, handover management, location tracking, and connections to services.
• describe the basic security measures taken to protect mobile and Wifi systems from unauthorised access and to prevent the interception of transmitted information.

Delivery platform requirements:
To access the course, a computer/tablet running a browser such as Chrome, Safari, Edge etc. is required. The device should have an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024x768.
