Telephony and data services

Target audience:

This course is designed for those who require an appreciation of telephony and data services including those joining the telecoms sector in a managerial or technical role.

 

Course prerequisites:

This course does not assume any prior knowledge of telecommunications.

 

Course objectives:
By the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the role of the main elements of, and the facilities offered by, a public switched telephone network (PSTN).
• describe the various measures of the quality of service provided by a public telephone network.
• describe and compare the role of geographic, non-geographic, and virtual numbering.
• describe the role of the elements of, and the facilities provided by, private telephony systems.
• describe the basic principles, service quality, and applications of "Voice over IP" with reference to its use in both public and private telephony systems.
• explain the concept of convergence and the benefits of employing a next generation network.
• compare the different ways of providing customers with access to the Internet and other data services.
• explain the significance of contention and give examples of contended and uncontended services.
• describe the benefits and applications of virtual private networks and virtual local area networks.
• describe the role of a service level agreement and the relevance of defining a quality of service.
• describe and compare the facilities and benefits provided by three types of cloud service.
• describe the services typically provided by Internet service providers (ISP) with reference to the tiered hierarchy of ISPs.
• describe the facilities offered by Internet telephony service providers with reference to the role of a SIP trunk.
