SDH networks

Target audience:

This course is designed for technicians and engineers involved in the design, commissioning and maintenance of SDH-based oprical transmission networks.

 

Course prerequisites:

An understanding of the basic principles of the synchronous digital hierarchy. It is recommended that the PTT e-learning course "SDH principles" is studied before attempting this "SDH payloads" course.
An appreciation of various types of optical interface and wavelength division multiplexing. The study of PTT course "Optical line systems" is recommended before attempting this course.
An understanding of Ethernet protocols will also be of benefit. The study of the PTT course "Ethernet networks" is suggested.

 

Course objectives:
By the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe and compare the role and capabilities of access, regional and core networks.
• describe the role of virtual containers in an SDH network with reference to payload, path and section overheads and pointers.
• explain the SDH payload mapping rules. 
• describe the operation, facilities and role of various types of SDH multiplexer and cross-connect equipment.
• compare the benefits and applications of SDH ring and mesh network topologies.
• describe the characteristics and capabilities of, and services offered by, Metro Ethernet Networks.
• describe and compare the facilities and applications of E-Line, E-Tree and E-LAN Carrier Ethernet services.
• describe the transport of IP traffic over SDH links using the PPP protocol. 
• describe methods of transporting Ethernet traffic over SDH links.
• describe the principles and advantages of virtual concatenation and the Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme when transporting IP traffic over an SDH network.
• describe the role and operation of various types of SDH and Ethernet protection scheme.

To access the course, a computer/tablet running a browser such as Chrome, Safari, Edge etc. is required. The device should have an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024x768.
