What you will learn:
You'll explore advanced VLAN management, network management and control protocols, assessing the performance of a wide area network, and the WAN services - including MPLS VPNs and Carrier Ethernet - that extend enterprise Ethernet connectivity over long distances. Security topics include advanced firewall concepts, intrusion detection, and network hardening techniques.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- explain that virtual LANs assist in keeping confidential information secure and enable the mobility of users.
- describe and compare the advantages, operation and applications of port based, MAC-based, tag-based VLANs and private VLANs.
- describe the role and operation of access lists, stateful packet inspection, firewalls and proxy servers in preventing unauthorised access to a local area network.
- describe how MAC flooding and ARP snooping attacks may allow unauthorised access to communications and explain how the attacks can be prevented..
- describe the role and facilities of SNMP-based network management tools.
- describe the use of the control protocol ICMP in verifying connections between hosts in IP-based networks.
- describe and compare the capabilities of the various types of connection between customers and wide area network service providers.
- describe and compare the features and applications of the various types of Carrier Ethernet wide area network service.
- describe and compare the features, advantages and applications of the various types of network that provide Carrier Ethernet services.
- describe how virtual private network connections provide secure communications over the Internet.
Course prerequisites:
