New 4G/LTE mobile course

April 30th, 2009

Advances in telecommunications in the last two or three decades have changed the way we play and work and, arguably, of all the telecoms services, mobile communications has had the biggest influence on people’s lives around the world. From farmers in remote areas of Africa checking commodity prices to company executives reading their emails while out of the office, we all increasingly depend on wireless access to telecom services.

The implementation of Third Generation (3G) mobile services has addressed in part the demand for more mobile bandwidth. However, standards development has not stopped there. 4G systems promise the same multimedia experience while on the move as is available from a fixed broadband connection. In fact, 4G is seen by many as the way of eliminating the digital divide in areas with poor access to the Internet.

The first implementations of 4G based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standards have already been announced in Scandinavia with others expected imminently in other parts of the world.

As part of PTT’s commitment to provide up-to-date training, PTT has recently released its latest e‑learning course “4G and LTE mobile systems” which provides an in-depth treatment of technical and service aspects of 4G and LTE.

Putting the distance into “distance learning”

April 3rd, 2009

PTT’s telecoms e-learning courses have been used by telecoms organisations worldwide for over 16 years but one of our newest clients is probably the most remote.
At over 10,000 miles from PTT’s UK offices and across 11 timezones, SamoaTel (www.samoatel.ws) in Samoa are about as far away as a client can get.

SamoaTel is the largest provider of fixed phone, mobile and broadband services to the beautiful Independent State of Samoa, (formerly known as Western Samoa), which is made up of volcanic islands and located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

SamoaTel has chosen PTT to deliver efficient, cost-effective and timely e-learning to their people. Alani Faiai, General Manager of Operations and Engineering at SamoaTel explained why they chose PTT’s telecoms e-learning:

“We have sought proper and cost effective online training for our technicians. The main reasons for preferring online training is because it’s easy to access with no travel required which is a big time saver for us.
SamoaTel Operations and Engineering Department decided to use PTT LearnTelecoms courses as additional training materials for junior staff, refresher for long service technicians and also as references to update the knowledge of field engineers. The content of each course suits our requirements and we have found PTT training attractive and the presentation of the materials is simple to understand.”

It’s a mobile world

March 20th, 2009

Two recent reports have identified the dynamism of the mobile communications sector.
A report by BuddeComm has highlighted the growth of mobile communications around the world. According to this report, average mobile penetration across Europe has reached about 125% with annual subscriber growth of about 8%. Worldwide growth of 13% is forecast for 2009 fuelled by expansion in Russia, India and China.

A report by Analysys Mason focuses on the benefits and challenges of the newest generation of mobile communications systems. These LTE systems promise cost savings for operators while meeting the requirements of new data services such as gaming, TV and video.

PTT offers a range of e-learning courses covering technical aspects of mobile communications. These are regularly updated and expanded to ensure the latest technological advances are explained in a clear, concise way.

We have just released two new courses which cover the fundamentals of mobile communications. These courses, Introduction to mobile systems and The air interface, are ideal for technical personnel who are new to the industry or who wish to update their knowledge of the underlying techniques that drive the various types of mobile system.

A new PTT e-learning course covering LTE mobile systems is in its final stages of development and will be released soon. If you would like information about this and other PTT mobile courses, please contact us.
