This course describes the payload capabilities of SDH links and the methods of carrying different types of payload over an SDH network.

Prerequisite:

An understanding of the basic principles of SDH. The study of the learntelecoms course "SDH principles" is recommended.

Concept of Administrative Units; payload capability of AU-4.

Operation of SOH pointer with reference to byte justification.

Mapping of tributary signals into lower order VCs.

Concept and applications of Tributary Unit Groups.

Asynchronous and byte synchronous VC-12 containers.

SDH payload mapping rules.

Function and details of Path Overheads (POH).

Transport of ATM traffic over SDH links.

Transport of IP traffic over SDH links using the PPP protocol.

Transport of IP over WDM links.

Transport of Ethernet traffic over SDH links
