This course provides an introduction to the principles and operation of circuit-switched telephony as used in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Fundamental issues that are also relevant to Voice over IP services are discussed.

Introduction to the PSTN inc. overview of the components and structure of the PSTN, functional elements of an exchange and numbering in the PSTN.
Role and principles of signalling inc. channel associated and common channel signalling.
Signalling in the local loop inc. DTMF and Calling Line Identity (CLI).
Inter-exchange Common Channel Signalling (CCS).
Services provided by, and operation of, the Intelligent Network.
Teletraffic engineering and service performance measurement inc. use of the Erlang B formula, Grade of Service and Availability.
Appendix: Information on older inter-exchange Channel Associated Signalling (CAS) systems inc. E&M (not assessed).
