IP networks course

This course is intended for technical staff involved in the planning, provisioning, maintenance and testing of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) broadband connections.

Prerequisites:

An understanding of basic datacoms principles. The study of the learntelecoms course "Principles of WANs" is recommended. An understanding of the operation of Ethernet LANs would also be an advantage. The learntelecoms course "Ethernet Networks" covers this subject.

Summary of topics covered:

Structure of the Internet and intranets; role of ISPs and NSPs.

Format of IPv4 and v6 addressing; use of subnet masks.

The Domain Name System (DNS) inc. use of URLs and name servers.

Role and operation of IP; role of TCP inc. flow control.

TCP and UDP port numbers.

Operation and use of RIP route discovery protocol.

Operation and use of OSPF, BGP and EGP route discovery protocols.

Operation and use of the Point to Point Protocol (PPP).

Role of application layer protocols such as FTP and SMTP.
