ATM Networks course

This course describes the components and operation of ATM networks. The interworking of ATM with other services such as Frame Relay is discussed as is the transport of IP traffic over an ATM network and the provision of a telephony over ATM service. The Private Network Network Interface (PNNI) protocols are also described in detail.

Prerequisites:

An understanding of the basic principles of ATM. It is recommended that TransNet course D - "Principles of ATM " is studied before attempting this course.


Summary of topics covered:

ATM network elements including switches and cross-connects.

ATM address formats in private and public ATM networks.

Interworking between Frame Relay and ATM networks.

Role of UNI, NNI, B-ICI, DXI and FUNI interfaces.

ATM signalling in public networks.

PNNI signalling, addressing and route discovery.

Requesting a Qof S using PNNI signalling.

Transporting voice channels over an ATM network

Classical IP over ATM; inARP address resolution.

Cut-through VCCs and NHRP address resolution.
