SDH management and maintenance course

This course describes the capabilities and structure of network management systems and discusses network maintenance.

Prerequisite:

An understanding of the basic principles of SDH and the payload capabilities of SDH signals. The study of the learntelecoms courses "SDH principles" and "SDH payloads" is recommended.

Summary of topics covered:

Typical facilities offered to users of a Network Management System (NMS).

Use of the different types of SDH overheads in fault location.

Provision and use by NMS of Embedded Communication Channels (ECC).

Structure of Telecommunications Management Networks (TMN).

Objectives of network maintenance; role of NMS and test equipment.

Role of SDH alarm indicators including RDI, REI and AIS.

Functions and capabilities of SDH test equipment.
