SDH networks course

This course describes the equipment and structures of broadband networks including SDH networks and all optical networks and discusses operational issues such as synchronisation and protection schemes.

Prerequisite:

An understanding of the basic principles of SDH and the payload capabilities of SDH signals. The study of the learntelecoms courses "SDH principles" and "SDH payloads"is recommended.

Summary of topics covered:

Operation, physical structure and role of Add/Drop multiplexers.

Synchronisation hierarchy; PRCs and SRCs; use of GPS timing.

Timing distribution; selecting an appropriate timing source.

The advantages and basic structure of STM-1 and STM-4 rings.

Interconnecting STM rings.

Comparison and use of SDH ring and mesh network topologies.

All-Optical Transport Networks (OTN); MOEMS optical cross-connecting.

Interconnecting networks - synchronisation, management & security issues.

Protection schemes including VC-trail, sub-network and span protection.
