The Startel suite of five courses provide an introduction to telecommunications.
Analogue and digital signals
Transmission fundamentals
Data communication principles
Principles of voice encoding and transmission
Telecoms networks and services
This course provides an introduction to the digital processing that is carried out on speech and video before transmission. The transmission of speech over traditional circuit-switched networks is compared to its transmission over IP networks such as the Internet.
The course is designed to be studied with the other courses in the StarTel suite. Alternatively, this course can be studied in preparation for the study of the PTT course covering Internet telephony: MediaNet B: "Voice over IP".
An understanding of the basic properties of analogue and digital signals as well as an understanding of the basic principles of packet switching. It is recommended that the PTT courses SRA: "Analogue and digital signals" and SRC: "Data communication principles" are studied before attempting this course.
Principles of PCM analogue to digital encoding.
Components and operation of a telephone handset; minimising echo.
Reducing the bandwidth requirement of speech: Compression techniques and their effects on quality.
Bit rate and delay requirements of video traffic; principles of JPEG & MPEG video compression.
Transmission of speech over a conventional telephony (circuit-switched) network.
Introduction to the transmission of speech over a packet-switched network - Voice over IP (VoIP).
