Telecoms fundamentals course

The course is designed to be studied as preparation for the other courses in the StarTel suite. The four StarTel courses together support the achievement of a Telecommunications or Communications Technology NVQ at level.


Summary of topics covered:

Principles and characteristics of analogue signals.

Causes and effects of analogue impairments.

Advantages of digital signals; explanations of bits, bytes and bit rate.

Causes of errors; principles of error detection and correction.

Components of a simple data link; protocols and the OSIRM.

Principles and comparison of synchronous & asynchronous operation.

Principles of AM, FSK, PSK, QAM and GMSK modulation.

Principles of HDB3 and 2B1Q line codes.

Principles of SDM, TDM, WDM, TDMA and FDMA multiplexing.

Introduction to and advantages of packet switching.
