OptLink is a suite of two courses covering optical fibre links available on CDROM or for delivery online.
With the convergence of voice, data and video services, telecommunications networks must handle high volumes of traffic. Optical fibre links have a high capacity and, therefore, are used in the backbone of modern networks. Some operators are beginning to include them in access networks as well. The two courses that make up the OptLink suite of e-learning courses cover the principles and practical aspects of optical links.
OptLink is designed for study by those who are, or intend to be, involved in the installation, testing and maintenance of optical fibre links. Starting with optical theory and finishing with the organisation of splice enclosures, OptLink emphasises the practical aspects of installing, maintaining and testing optical networks.
OptLink consists of two separate but integrated courses:
A: Optical fibre principles
B: Fibre jointing and testing
OptLink can be used by itself or to prepare trainees for hands-on equipment-specific training.
OptLink includes interactive OTDR simulations, allowing trainees to test various combinations of link components with different test parameters - resulting OTDR displays are explained - without tying up expensive test gear and optical fibre resources.
OptLink also uses hypertext and multimedia video examples to explain and illustrate the technical material. Training facilities include an extensive glossary of terms which can be searched and sections can be copied to a trainee's individual notes.
The OptLink courses are fully integrated. Revision links are provided in each chapter which take the trainee to relevant sections in the other OptLink course (if licensed). The trainee can also place his/her own bookmarks which are accessible from any of the courses.
Related learntelecoms e-learning courses: The SyncNet course C: "Optical line systems" gives more detail about the active components of an optical link including SDH terminal equipment, WDM techniques and the principles and use of optical amplifiers.
